Matthew Reardon

Research Technician - Cawthron Institute
Pacific oyster hatchery production and breeding

After graduating in 2015 from James Cook University (Australia), where I studied a Bachelor of Science majoring in Aquaculture, I spent the past nine years at various commercial and research aquaculture operations producing and researching prawns, Barramundi, macroalgae and currently Pacific oysters.
My role at Cawthron involves the running of the commercial oyster operations, ranging from broodstock conditioning and maintenance to hatchery and nursery production of juveniles (spat), as well as providing larval rearing support to various research projects. Our lab provides diploid and triploid Pacific oyster spat to commercial clients across NZ, and we aim to support the overall growth of the industry through both breeding programmes and commercial spat supply.
